Kraig Varner

Kraig Varner is yet another talented Sculptor that our business: Main Street Art represents. These are a couple of photos I took today of his sculpture of Brigham Young. A monumental version of this sculpture resides in the Utah State Capital.

Sunset

The Alpine Art Center is slowly adding more and more sculptures to the gardens. This was a picture I took a few months ago on my way to the car.

Summer Travels

We have done a lot of summer shows and events this year. One fun little note was that "Reflections" won third place in the Utah State Fair.

Bouncin' in Boulder City

I just received some fun news I wanted to share. Last year I took part in a sculpture show in Boulder City, Nevada. This is a unique outdoor show where you loan a piece for a year and it is installed on the city streets for the visitors of downtown Boulder City to enjoy. They award a small amount of money to the artists for being accepted and for transporting the piece. Now that the year was up, I was ready to go pick up my sculpture, however I just received a call informing me that my piece received the most People's Choice votes, and will be purchased to remain on permanent display in Boulder City!

Good girl, keep on Bouncin'!

Will spring ever come

This was the scene, yesterday April 16th, as I arrived at the Art Center. I think we are skipping spring this year.

This was a fun photo I took of the piece in the early steps of the Patina process (the process of giving the bronze desired colors)

working on the foam

It has been a fun experience to work on the foam. I first spent some time carving and sanding down some flaws. When that was finished I started putting on a thin layer a clay over the entire piece. The foam provides much of the needed structure but still needs some adjustments and detailing. Once the thin coat of clay is finished I will spend the next couple of weeks fine tuning the clay until it is finished.
I will post a few more photos in a couple of weeks.

Life-size Spartan

We sent a wax copy of the Spartan to a company in Canada. They did a 3-d scan and with their milling machinery created a life size version of the Spartan. I will do a bit of carving in the foam and then coat it with clay and refine it even more.

The foam is a great way to get a head start on your larger work. The sculpture ends up requiring less clay and time to get to the finished piece.
